Donald Bess was born in Tampa, Florida. He is currently set to graduate with a bachelor of fine arts with a drawing emphasis in May 2015. He has developed his artistic abilities and knowledge at both the University of South Florida in Tampa and the University of Colorado Denver. He has exhibited his work at RedLine in Denver, the University of Colorado Denver, and Hillsborough Community College in Florida, and he has participated in editions of Krista Peel's Calendar project for the years 2008 through 2010.
Bess has worked in a variety of media, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital design, and video editing, but currently focuses his efforts on pen-and-ink drawing. He has been influenced by a wide range of artists that work in fantastical, dreamlike, and satirical modes, from the classic works of Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco Goya, to the Surrealist group, to the more contemporary creations of Pop Surrealists, underground comics and Outsider artists. His primary aesthetic interests lie in exploring the expressive qualities of realistic representation of impossible scenarios.
